The Christ the Teacher Catholic School community is blessed to have Mrs. Meghan Johnston as our full-time school counselor. Mrs. Johnston is a licensed professional mental health counselor and a National Certified Counselor. She's worked with youth and their families in various mental health settings for many years. She is a mental health and wellness advocate for the entire school community. She works in partnership with the parents, students, administration, and school nurse to ensure that students can achieve maximum learning capability in the classroom. Mrs. Johnston can be reached by emailing [email protected].
School counseling services at Christ the Teacher Catholic School are preventative and proactive in nature. Just as the school nurse is on-site only for the physical needs of the students, we are blessed to have a full-time school counselor equipped to attend to the social-emotional needs of the school community. The counseling program is curriculum-based and is available to all.
The counseling program serves four primary groups:
Services offered are individual-solution-focused counseling, small group, and drop-in crisis counseling that are designed to help enhance the areas of academic development and personal/social growth.
Classroom counseling lessons are taught on a monthly basis. These lessons target issues such as bullying, conflict resolution, peer relations, and drug and alcohol awareness. It is a planned, developmental program of lessons designed to foster students' academic, career, personal, and social growth. The counseling program coordinates with outside agencies, such as Delaware Prevent Child Abuse, in order to enrich the counseling curriculum.
Teacher, parent, and outside agencies (therapists, doctors, etc.) consultations are held to discuss student concerns and develop a plan of action that will assist the student in reaching his/her fullest potential.
Above all, school counselors are student advocates who work cooperatively with other individuals and organizations to promote the positive development of children. Counseling is a confidential relationship in which the counselor meets with students individually and in small groups to help resolve or cope constructively with their problems and developmental concerns. A student's confidentiality is respected unless they are hurt, hurting themselves, or hurting others.
